The Dream

Kalugin falls asleep and has a dream: He was sitting in some bushes when a policeman walks by.

Kalugin wakes up, scratches his mouth, falls asleep again, and has another dream: He passes by the bushes, but there sits a policeman, hiding .

Kalugin wakes up, puts a newspaper under his head so his saliva would not wet the pillow, falls asleep again, and has another dream: He is sitting in the bushes and a policeman passes by.

Kalugin wakes up, changes the newspaper, lies down and falls asleep again. Falling asleep and having a dream again: he passes by the bushes, but there sits a policeman, hiding in the bushes.

So Kalugin wakes up and decides not to sleep anymore, but momentarily falls asleep and has a dream: He is standing behind a policeman while the bushes are passing by.

Kalugin screams and rolls all over the bed, but can not wake up. Kalugin sleeps straight for four days and four nights, and on the fifth day he wakes up so thin, that his boots had to be tied up with little ropes, so they won't fall off.

In the bakery where Kalugin was usually buying his wheat bread, he was not recognized and spitefully given semi-rye.

When the Sanitary Inspection comes up to inspect the apartments and saw Kalugin, they found him anti sanitary and worthless and ordered his landlord to throw him out together with all his dust.

Kalugin was fold in halves and thrown away like dust.
